The Affection of Video Games in Violence
Video games, an often hobby for pre-teens, teens, and even adults are banned in China. A simple hobby that can seem harmless and innocent is it possible that violence is subconsciously affecting our minds. The question is, “Do they affect us in a good way or bad”?
Video games can affect teenagers slightly in their behavior. Studies show they cause slightly more aggressive behavior in some teens. An increase in aggressiveness can often lead to misbehavior in school and at home. Yet, video games are said to decrease misbehavior drastically.
Ever since the beginning of violent video games crime rates have decreased. Many teens use video games to relief stress and daily problems. Just like a sport or any other club. It can blow off steam by having a few minutes or even a few hours of fun. Hobbies often distract kids from drugs and other crimes often committed by the influence of boredom. Boredom can often lead to drinking, drug use, and crime influence. Video games provide a source of entertainment and less exposure to actual violence. Whereas video games only show the fantasy side of things tearing away any curiosity in people.
Video games play a big role in media, but not as big as cable TV. TV is filled with violence and exposes the reality of things. Simply flipping to the news channel, a channel erupted with violence and casualties. Movies and TV shows encouraging violence and drugs. A film can promote these things by simply being an excellent film or interpreting a theme through it, such as the protagonist imitating coolness or other attractive themes. A well known TV show titled ‘Dexter’ is a great example of the affection of violence in media. A TV show in where an undercover cop is a serial killer killing mischievous, ruthless people. A news reports shows how a teenager strangled his younger brother in inspiration of being like the main character “Dexter”. He was a already psychologically disturbed and observably needed help. He was simply planted an idea, which would have been portrayed sooner or later. He was psychologically unstable to begin with and need special help not the incapacity of seeing less violence. Ending in the conclusion that if video games are banned so should every other form of social media promoting violence.
In Martin Luther King Jr.’s ‘Letter from a Birmingham Jail’ he states “even if our motives are
presently misunderstood” (King 180). A video game is made to bring entertainment not more violence. This also explains why video games are given ratings. John F. Kennedy states “Together let us explore the stars, conquer the deserts, eradicate disease, tap the ocean depths, and encourage the arts and commerce’ (Kennedy 199). Explaining how we need to try new things and learn from them. Evil will always be there and it is our job to fight whether media affects it or not. Avoiding media will not help because it will always be there. Our rights ensure our right to be able to explore as we like. It is our decision if we take that right or not.
